Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport

(Ottawa, Ontario – February 17, 2015) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) would like to congratulate board member Dr. Jack Taunton on his induction into the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine’s (CASEM) esteemed group of Life Members. Dr. Taunton was honoured with the prestigious designation in December 2014, but was formally welcomed on Friday at the CASEM/OMA Sport Medicine Conference in Ottawa, Ontario. 

“Dr. Taunton’s career in sport medicine is extensive, impressive and well-deserving of this recognition,” said Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES. “He has contributed so much to Canadian sport and we are proud to see CASEM acknowledge his accomplishments. The CCES is proud to have such a prominent individual on our board.” 

Dr. Taunton joined the CCES board in 2013. He is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Sports Medicine at the University of British Columbia and is the director of sports medicine for Fortius Sport and Health. He was the chief medical officer (CMO) for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and CMO for Canada at the Sydney Olympics, two Pan American and two World Student Games. He was also the team physician to the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies. He was inducted into the BC Athletics Sports Hall Of Fame and the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame and was named to the Globe and Mail 2012 Power 50.

CASEM is an organization of physicians committed to excellence in the practice of medicine as it applies to all aspects of physical activity. Dr. Taunton was selected as a life member by the CASEM board of directors for his extensive contributions to sport medicine in Canada.
