2021 World Anti-Doping Code Draft, New Charter of Athlete Rights and International Standards Open for Feedback from Sport Community

(Ottawa, Ontario – January 31, 2019) -- The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is pleased to provide additional details about the current phase of the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code review consultation process. The CCES continues to lead the process of providing comments to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on behalf of Canadians and welcomes feedback on all aspects of the Code, International Standards and the new Anti-Doping Charter of Athlete Rights.

Provide your comments on these drafts to the CCES by February 28, 2019 (email: [email protected]) or directly to WADA through WADAConnect no later than March 4, 2019.

National sport organizations can also provide comments and feedback during their annual winter meetings with the CCES and during a webinar the CCES will hold to discuss Code changes. Details of the webinar will be communicated by direct invitation.

2021 World Anti-Doping Code and International Standards

This is the final round of review for the Code and International Standards and it is unlikely that there will be further substantive changes at this stage of the consultation process. The majority of changes to come, if any, will likely focus on refining the changes outlined in the current drafts. The CCES wishes to highlight the following proposed changes and new elements of the draft 2021 Code: Summary of Major Changes Proposed to Second Draft of 2021 World Anti-Doping Code

The current drafts of the 2021 Code and International Standards are available from WADA’s website.

NEW! Anti-Doping Charter of Athlete Rights

This is the first and only review phase for the new Anti-Doping Charter of Athlete Rights (The Charter). This document outlines athlete rights with respect to the fight against doping in sport and aims to further support athletes worldwide in their right to compete in clean, fair and ethical sport. It includes actual rights, which are contained in the Code and International Standards, as well as aspirational rights.

Athletes in particular are encouraged to provide feedback on the charter. The CCES is committed to working with AthletesCAN to ensure the voice of Canadian athletes is represented in this review. We also encourage sport organizations to share this information with athletes as a reminder that their feedback is invaluable.

NEW! International Standard for Results Management (ISRM)

The International Standard for Results Management (ISRM) is a new standard that is open for stakeholder consultation. The ISRM will undergo a second round of review in May 2019 and will come into effect in 2021.

Important dates for the 2021 Code review:

  • February 28, 2019: Deadline for providing comments to the CCES for Phase 3.
