WADA launches third phase of 2021 Code Review and introduces new Charter of Athlete Rights

(Ottawa, Ontario – December 20, 2018) – The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has launched the third phase of the 2021 Code review, the second phase for the International Standards, and has introduced the new Anti-Doping Charter of Athlete Rights and International Standard for Results Management (ISRM).

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) will lead the process of providing comments to WADA on behalf of the Canadian sport community through a consultation set to begin in January 2019 and conclude March 4, 2019. Thank you to everyone who contributed to previous phases of the 2021 Code review.

What’s New?

The Anti-Doping Charter of Athlete Rights (the Charter) is a new document that outlines athlete rights with respect to the fight against doping in sport and aims to further support athletes worldwide in their right to compete in clean, fair and ethical sport. The Charter includes actual rights, which are contained in the Code and International Standards, as well as aspirational rights. This is the only review phase for the Charter and athletes are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on this document.

The International Standard for Results Management is a new standard that is now open for stakeholder consultation. The ISRM will undergo a second round of review in May 2019 and will come into effect in 2021.

The 2021 Code

Now available for review, the second draft version of the 2021 Code incorporates comments received from stakeholders during the previous review phases. To facilitate this latest round of consultation WADA has provided a clean version of the Code, redline versions that track changes between the first, second and current drafts, comments from stakeholders, and a summary of major proposed changes.

International Standards

The International Standards, with the exception of the ISRM, are now in the second review phase. WADA has provided documents to facilitate the review process including, where applicable, a clean version, a redline version, a summary of major proposed changes and comments stemming from the first round of consultation.

Next Steps

The CCES will announce the details of the consultation process for the Canadian sport community in January 2019. In the meantime, stakeholders are welcome to review the documents and submit comments to [email protected].

All of the documents referred to in this advisory are available from WADA’s website.
