Fair, Safe and Open Sport in Canada Receives a Welcome Boost

(Ottawa, Ontario – March 20, 2019) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) vision statement is: Sport in Canada that is fair safe and open to everyone. The additional $6 million in Federal Budget 2019 to promote accessible, ethical, equitable and safe sport in Canada is welcome news! Values-based sport is accessible, ethical, equitable and safe – and these are the characteristics being bolstered in Canadian sport as announced in Budget 2019.

“This dedicated additional funding in support of a safe and healthy sport system in Canada is much needed and it highlights the critical need for Canadian sport to be deliberate in ensuring that sport is values-based and principle-driven. This echoes the recommendations included in The Values Proposition: Building a Stronger Canada Through Values-Based Sport,” said Paul Melia, CCES President and CEO. “The CCES will pledge its support to assist Sport Canada to develop the strong criteria that should be used to help Canadian sport access this new funding and ensure it furthers this important work.”

Values-based and principle-driven sport – True Sport – helps make Canada better by instilling character in our kids, strengthening our communities and increasing opportunities for excellence. The CCES will continue to pursue its mission of making sport better.

About the CCES

The CCES is an independent, national, not-for profit organization with a responsibility to administer the Canadian Anti-Doping Program. We recognize that true sport can make a great difference for individuals, communities and our country. The CCES acknowledges funding, in part, from the Government of Canada.
