Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport Partners with Cycling Canada on Consultation into Doping

(Ottawa, Ontario – May 22, 2014) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is pleased to announce a partnership with Cycling Canada to consult with members of the Canadian cycling community regarding the issue of doping.

The joint initiative, led by Cycling Canada, will consist of a series of interviews designed to gather information regarding the prevalence, actual or perceived, of past and present doping activity in cycling.

“Speaking with athletes and their support personnel to better understand the issue of doping through partnerships such as this, is an important area of focus in the 2015 World Anti-Doping Code, which comes into effect January 1, 2015. We are pleased to be assisting Cycling Canada in this initiative,” said Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES.

The primary goal of the consultation is to engage various members of the cycling community in confidential discussions around their experiences, personal knowledge and perceptions of doping in the sport of cycling in Canada.

“The Board of Directors of Cycling Canada is fully committed to supporting clean athletes and their desire to succeed in the sport within an ethical framework,” noted Greg Mathieu, CEO and Secretary General of Cycling Canada. “This consultation has been designed to advise us on the prevalence and extent of performance enhancing drug use, past and present, in our sport with the goal of rooting it out through appropriate deterrence and education. We are appreciative of the assistance and collaboration of the CCES in this endeavor.”

To maintain the anonymity of the athletes and support personnel, the discussions will be conducted by an independent third party. Interviews with take place between May and July, with a final report provided to Cycling Canada and the CCES. The report will be made public in August 2014. Those who take part in interviews will do so anonymously.
