The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport congratulates the Government of Canada on its most recent efforts to reduce injuries in children and youth who participate in sport and recreation

(Ottawa, ON – March 17, 2011) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) would like to congratulate the Minister of State for Sport, Gary Lunn, and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health for the recent funding announcement to support injury prevention in sport and recreation among children and youth.

“Prevention of injury in sport is of particular concern for me on a daily basis,” said Dr. Louise Walker, Chair of the CCES Board of Directors. “Investing in activities that increase awareness of the risk of injuries and ways to prevent them will help ensure that our children and youth are provided a safe, welcoming and rewarding environment in whatever sport they choose.”

The Government of Canada announced it would provide $5 million over two years to support injury prevention initiatives that reach Canadian children and youth in the communities where they live and play.  With a focus on preventing major injuries such as concussions, drowning and fractures, this new investment will leverage the work and networks of non-governmental organizations to promote the safety of children and youth in high-participation activities such as hockey, snow sports, cycling and water sports.

The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to foster ethical sport for all Canadians, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.
